Flirty questions for couples
Compliments, attraction and a little tension: playful questions for couples, and how to keep them fun for both of you.
Flirting is mostly attention. It’s noticing someone, and letting them see that you noticed. These questions give you an excuse to say the things you’ve probably been thinking anyway: what you noticed first, which of their outfits you secretly love, what they do that’s attractive without realizing it.
They come from Flirty, the third of Kindling’s seven levels. It’s warm, playful and a little charged, and it’s never crude. Here’s the whole level, plus a few notes on making it land.
Flirty, not explicit
The best flirty questions leave room. “What could your partner whisper to you that would make you blush?” is more fun than anything more direct, because the answer is up to the person answering. They decide how bold to be.
Keep it specific to the two of you and a little bit suggestive, and the tension takes care of itself. Questions that are too blunt tend to make people laugh nervously and change the subject, which is the opposite of what you were going for.
Read the mood first
Flirty questions work best when you both already feel at ease. Some signs you’re there: you’re laughing easily, you’ve drifted closer without noticing, and the pauses feel comfortable rather than awkward.
Small signals count, too. If one of you leans back, goes quiet or changes the subject, take it as a cue to slow down, not a challenge to push through.
If you’re not there yet, spend a little longer on lighter questions. There’s no rush. In Kindling, you only move up to Flirty when you both privately say you’re in, and neither of you ever sees who said “not yet”. That way, nobody has to be the one who said no out loud.
Make compliments specific
Several of these questions are compliments in disguise. “You’re cute” is nice. “The way you laugh at your own jokes before you get to the end gets me every time” is better, because it proves you were paying attention.
Specific compliments are also easier to accept. Plenty of people deflect praise on reflex. If your partner does, there’s a card for that below: give them a compliment they’re not allowed to argue with. They can only say thank you.
Dares that ask first
A few Flirty cards are small, physical dares: sitting a little closer, a slow dance, a kiss on the cheek or the hand. Each one is written as an offer, not an order. You ask; your partner chooses yes, something different, or not tonight.
That isn’t a technicality. It’s what makes it fun. A dare one person feels pushed into is just uncomfortable for both of you. If your partner says no or passes, smile, say “fair”, and move on. In the game, the bolder dares also come with a gentler version, for nights when that suits you better.
If you’ve been together for years
Flirting tends to fade not because the attraction goes, but because you stop saying it out loud. These questions work just as well for couples who’ve been together a decade as for couples on their third date, and maybe better.
Answer as if you were telling a friend about your partner. What did you notice first? What still gets you? The answers are often things your partner has never heard you say, and hearing them can feel brand new.
What to avoid
Comparisons with exes. Comments about bodies that your partner hasn’t invited. Compliments with a catch, like “You’d look great if…”. And pushing for an answer after a laugh-and-dodge: a dodge is a pass, and a pass is always allowed.
