Questions for couples

Questions for couples, from sweet to deep

Four levels of questions for couples, from silly first impressions to the things that are hard to say, and how to use them well.

Good questions do something small talk can’t: they give the other person room to show you who they are. The trick is the order. Ask something heavy too early and it lands like a job interview. Stay light all night and you go home knowing their coffee order and not much else.

The questions on these pages come from Kindling, our free card game for couples, where they’re arranged in levels that warm up slowly. Start with something silly and stop wherever the night feels right. Each level has its own page with the full list and advice on using it.

Level 1 · Sweet

First-date questions

Light, funny and low-stakes. Good for a first or second date, a long drive, or any night you’d like to laugh more than you talk.

  • If the two of you were in a movie, what genre would it be?
  • What’s a completely unimportant hill you will absolutely die on?
  • Describe your perfect lazy Sunday with your partner.

Level 2 · Curious

Getting-to-know-you questions

Stories, values, and the people and places that shaped you. For when you want to know the person, not just the profile.

  • When do you feel most like yourself?
  • What are you proud of that you rarely get to talk about?
  • What’s something you used to believe strongly and have changed your mind about?
All 30 Curious questions
Level 3 · Flirty

Flirty questions

Attraction, compliments and a little tension. Playful, warm and never crude.

  • What does your partner do that’s attractive without them realizing it?
  • What’s the most romantic thing someone could do for you?
  • What scent, song, or place puts you in a romantic mood?
All 30 Flirty questions
Level 4 · Close

Deep questions

What makes you feel safe, what you need, what’s hard to say. All talk, no touching.

  • What helps you feel secure with someone?
  • What’s something you need that you find hard to ask for?
  • When you go quiet, what’s usually going on inside?

Which level should you start with?

On a first or second date, start with Sweet, and feel free to stay there. If you’ve been together a while and want to catch up properly, Curious is a good place to begin. Flirty suits nights when you’re already relaxed and enjoying each other’s company.

Save Close for when you have time, privacy and the energy for something honest. Whatever you choose, it’s fine to move back down a level. A light question after a heavy one can be a relief.

How to use these questions well

  • Go in order. Each level builds on the one before. Starting light lets trust grow before the questions ask for more.
  • Both answer. A question you ask but won’t answer yourself is an interrogation. Take turns, including on your own questions.
  • Ask one follow-up. The first answer is the headline; the follow-up gets you the story. “What happened next?” and “Why that one?” work on almost anything.
  • Treat a pass as a full answer. Anyone can skip any question, without giving a reason. If your partner passes, move on lightly and don’t ask why.
  • Don’t fix, don’t grade. When someone shares something tender, “Thank you for telling me” usually beats advice.
  • Stop while it’s good. You don’t have to finish a list. Ending on a laugh or a warm moment beats pushing on to question thirty.

Planning a night in?

Our guide to a slow date night at home covers the rest: setting the room, pacing the evening, checking in with each other and ending well. And if things get heavy, our safety page has advice and helplines.

Or let the game do the asking

Kindling deals these questions as cards, one at a time, on one phone you pass between you. You only move up a level when you both privately say yes. It’s free and needs no account.
